Let's figure out how to completely eliminate gas use in cars first.

We already have. It just isn't widely adopted yet, mostly due to having to choose between "affordable" and "can actually cover a decent distance without multiple charging stops along the way". Also, the slight issue of just how much environmental damage the batteries do during their production...

Oil companies won't allow it to exist. Ever since gas wnet from $1.60 to almost $3, I went from paying $500 a month to almost $1000 a month in fuel expenses. That's how much a $1 increase hurts me.

If oil companies actually had the power to prevent it, we wouldn't even see what we've already got. They don't care about environmental factors, and electric car lobbyists have done quite the job of covering up the harm the batteries do - it's known, but it's not common knowledge. For those who don't travel much / far, the low-range cars are already sufficient; and given time the expensive ones will come down to an affordable price. They'd also be trying to shut down the bicycle industry, ride-sharing, etc, which are currently a much bigger threat to them than electric vehicles.

Maybe it's just not that easy to make one that's genuinely environmentally-friendly in every way...
