Expansion was not a component of Communist ideology post-Lenin. Russia acted in a manner to avoid direct conflict at all costs, mostly out of self interest, and sought to create a wall of buffer states between themselves and the West. The Nazi regime consistently glorified the idea of a conflict that was arguably unwinnable from the start. I don't think it's fair to completely divorce the ideologies from what actually occurred.
