He designed the characters Shadow and Setzer in Final Fantasy VI. Prior to that, he did enemy design in Final Fantasy V.

But yes, VII was the first time he did character art. While I imagine that he was likely doing the anime art at that point, someone told him to make it look more realistic to appeal to western audiences.

I wish I could find that article. I can't find it on Wikipedia, but it might be on the Final Fantasy Wiki or something under either "Final Fantasy VII" or "Tetsuya Nomura." When I get out of class, I'll see if I can check.
