Obviously the *best* move would have been for him to read what was happening correctly and predict John would get voted and give him the idol but that's a little unrealistic. What WAS known was that Angelina would probably get votes, and by giving her the idol he's proven himself to his alliance and to her. Angelina wasn't actually going home, so you might say that it was a waste, but I disagree; that's actually why it was a good move. If she begged him for the idol after he promised he'd save her, and he DIDN'T do it, and then John goes home in a 3-2 split, their relationship would be pretty permanently destroyed. Instead she should definitely come out of this feeling like she owes him big time. Though I don't think Dan really thought this move out that much.
