Back in early 2015, a lot of usernames were freed up when GameFAQs permanently disconnected themselves from GameSpot's user database. This freed up a lot of usernames that couldn't be used because they were already taken on GameSpot. The change meant that username availability no longer had to be checked against usernames that only exist on GameSpot.
