Personally I still find living with roommates to be a waste of money. At least by paying my mother "rent", the money is still going toward her house, that my sister and I will probably inherent. To me, paying for rent on an apartment/house whether alone or with roommates is a complete waste of money and would be a last resort.

I would rather live at home with my mom and contribute to the utility, house insurance, and property tax first. Following that I would consider a house/condo if I can afford it. After all this if living at home and getting my own house/condo is not an option then I would consider renting an apartment/house either by myself or with roommates. Regardless of your stance of living with your parents or living away, the money one pays when renting does nothing for us in the long run.

By that same logic, woudln't living on your own *also* be a waste of money? >_> If you're arguing that there are more benefits to living with mom & dad and paying down what you're going to inherit, that's essentially an argument for staying there until your folks die.

I'm almost 30 and I live with my parents right now. They let me live in my old bedroom, don't make me pay rent, and I get to eat good food. My commute to work is about 30-40 minutes but beats having to pay rent. I make good money but I wouldn't have anything to gain by having my own place and paying $1300/mo. My parents and I get along so why not? Going to move out next year though when my girlfriend moves here.

If you have a good relationship with your family, have a job and aren't an immature leech then there's nothing wrong with living with your parents at pretty much any age. People who say otherwise are either jealous or insecure about something.

Yes. As long as you have a job then you're not a leech if you still live with your parents at that age.

Or less of a leech.

Explain how one is a leech when paying his own way.

You're paying a portion of your way, not your own way. And if you're living with your folks, you're almost certainly going to be getting a lot of fringe benefits whether it's some free meals, access to services you aren't expected to chip in on, etc. After all, if it wasn't strictly a better deal than living on your own or with roommates, you would just live on your own or with roommates.
