Incidentally, this is why some series (such as the Atelier series) looked so awkward on the PS3.

Games like Atelier Iris and Mana Khemia were made in 2D (or at least using 2D sprites) as late as the late PS2 era. And when the company that made them finally decided to switch to full 3D for PS3, they wound up with outright laughable 3D animation and 3D engines, made all the more noticeable by the fact that they still wound up with very high resolution and framerates compared to back when people were still figuring out "how to 3D" back on the PSX.

For that last part, actually go look at some video footage of, say, Final Fantasy 7's walking animations, or its in battle attack or spell animations. The characters "running" to an enemy from where they stand for a basic attack is literally a SINGLE "FRAME" of model movement (and due to the framerate, it only really actually shows on screen for a few frames so its not very noticeable).
