They can lawfully detain you if they suspect you of theft. The end result is waiting for a cop to show up who, in the process of the investigation, can compel you to provide your receipt.

It's sad that you believe that, only the police can detain someone for suspicion. Other individuals can only detain someone if they witness them commit or attempt to commit a crime. That's beside the fact that refusing to provide proof of purchase isn't a suspicious act in the first place.
