i cannot wrap my head around people who think "paying for something" automatically means they are entitled to no ads

One of the big selling points of cord cutting is NO FUCKING ADS!

uhhh, no it's not. "cord cutting" implies dropping cable. cable doesn't have ads, it gets revenue from subscription fees.

Alright let me rephrase, one of the big selling points of going to a streaming service is NO FUCKING ADS!

Was that actually something they advertised for tv shows? I know there's an option to pay more for zero ads, but I don't recall Netflix, Prime, or Hulu saying they would never feature ads.

Netflix absolutely said they will never run ads. They are toying with the idea of Netflix show ads between shows but they are adamant they will never run regular commercials.
