Today's poll is a perfect illustration of the GameFAQs visitor's shallowness and unwillingness to let go of the old. It has been 20 years since Zelda 64 was released, and the GameFAQs visitor is still clinging to their memories of this game, while the series has been declining and becoming increasingly irrelevant with each release--a well earned decline, considering what Nintendo has been doing to the classic formula. It baffles me that somehow the protagonist from this game can still ride high off the popularity of a game released that long ago and still beat modern, relevant characters from critically acclaimed games.

It is not even because Zelda 64 was that great of a game for its time. All it did was catch the attention of teenagers and pubescent boys with a move from 2-D to 3-D and turn some heads with its bishounen anime designs, but in doing so it destroyed its creative identity. Before Zelda 64, the series used to have a distinct artistic identity, with a somewhat round faced elf in a colorful world. Zelda 64 turned that into a generic fantasy anime, starring an impossibly beautiful and bishounen lead. And it worked with the shallow gamers, establishing the Link as a perennial favorite among GameFAQs visitors. I just wish the people here would let old irrelevant games die off like they deserve.
