It's covering the connection between the criminal and the victim. The alcohol and cocaine part may or may not be important at the moment, but her escorting is how they met. Why make that the focus? I'm sure the court would like to know the motive and the nature of the crime. Knowing their relationship is a good start. The fact that her friends and family didn't seem to know answers a lot of questions. Also the guy is married and definitely has money. They both have secrets they're trying to keep.
