They're very different games, and Epic Seven is scratching an RPG itch for me that I've been needing. Epic Seven feels more like a standard JRPG than FFBE did, so that may be a bit off putting because, well, we've seen this kind of game before. It's nothing new. And even if 3* units are still solid, getting a good 4* or 5*, as well as a decent Artifact, can go a long way, so luck still may play something of a factor in how much someone can enjoy the game.

What I'm enjoying right now is the unit building. I used to enjoy that in FFBE, having to pick and choose what units I wanted to build up with my cactuars and pots, playing with team comps, etc. Now we're so saturated with units that it's just gotten stale. Cactuar fusing, lots more pots, TMRs, all of it for a unit that for the most part is only incrementally better than what I already have. Yes putting together good teams for a specific boss can and has been fun, but once you hit that sweet spot of the right team, most fights become a test of your ability to chain, and nothing else. And that, actually, has been my biggest issue. Chaining with anything other than DR and maybe Octaslash frames just sucks, and kills tons of units from being viable. What good is AR chaining if you can't hit it even half of the time? None, that's what, especially on bosses where you have to kill past a certain threshold. Mess up your chain, your dead. So back to the old boring DR frames if you want any sense of consistency.

Epic Seven removes the chaining, and a lot of the extraneous abilities that just clog the list, and it gives a bit more of a compact feel that's refreshing. Same thing with the unit library, right now it's fresh, so the pool is small, and getting something usually means you can use it and it's not just fodder. FFBE has just become so bloated with units that pulling isn't fun anymore. We're getting all this free stuff, and I just...don't care. What good is a few guaranteed 5* units when I'm not going to get anything out of them?

Mostly it's just because Epic Seven is fresh, new, and yet similar enough that it feeds that gacha fix I need. I dunno how long I'll stick with it, but it's still fun. FFBE has, at least I think, started to feel like it's run its course. Everything they're adding is only incrementally better than the last batch of units. Bosses are having to resort to dispelling buffs and covers, which are usually the only way units could survive the insane damage they threw in the first place. With the elemental requirements coming up, you pretty much have to have the right TMRs to survive a fight. And we all abhor bosses with pre-emptive mana drain. The challenge has always been to survive the mechanics of the fight, but lately things have gone in the direction of removing what allows you to survive in the first place, and that doesn't have the same feel as building up the right pattern, timing thresholds, etc. And one-shotting past a threshold is satisfying the first few times, but when every fight requires it? Then it's just a test to see if you have the most powerful units, not your teambuilding.

I loved FFBE, I thought it was one of the most fun gacha games I've played. But the game just isn't fresh anymore, and it shows.
