Signaling a virtue. You're signaling to them that you care. I honestly think that's pretty worthless but I said it's a harmless virtue signal which it is. But don't lie to yourself and pretend you're solving a problem that existed for them. It didn't and it doesn't.

That's a lot of words to justify being needlessly mean and thoughtless.
