Has to be a constructed story. I can't imagine earbud wires carrying enough current to melt plastic before burning themselves out. Even if they were plugged directly into a light socket.

Then imagine the transformer in a charger shorting out and shooting 110 or 220 VAC into the battery of a cell phone, ipod, or whatever, likely just fry the charging diode, maybe explode the Lithium battery, but earbuds? That's one that doesn't even need Mythbusters or Snopes.
