It certainly could if it isnt properly galvanized and creates a path of lesser resistance for the current

"Galvanized"? Like rain gutters? Made of steel, plated with zinc so it's resistant to rust? Copper wires aren't "galvanized". And hair-thin earbud wires would melt before conducting any significant current to the earbud, they're rated only for signal-level: millivolts at nearly zero current.
