It would be interesting to see if someone into loli hentai is more likely to "graduate" to actual kids, or if it really does act as a "release valve" and prevents that progression (because I'm all in favour of someone getting their rocks off to a cartoon - regardless of what that cartoon depicts - if it prevents harm to an actual, real-life child).

Yeah I looked into the works of James Cantor and Michael Seto, a couple of the best minds in the field and I don't know if they've studied loli specifically, or if their research into pedophilia and child pornography use has simply lumped in loli/cartoons under the umbrella of kiddie porn. Though on the subject of lifelike sex dolls that strongly resemble flesh and blood children, James Cantor has said there's no reason in current medical science to assume someone who'd go for the doll would necessarily escalate to offending with live children. I imagine loli is similar or even safer since the stylized drawings typically don't approach reality in the first place.

Honestly, we have a shit-lousy system of dealing with pedophiles. There is no off-ramp for anyone who recognizes they are at risk of abusing a child but wants to prevent it. Duty-to-report laws mean that even approaching a psychologist for help risks triggering a police investigation (which, given the subject material, could impact everything from employment to family to standing in the community, even if that investigation ultimately turns up nothing) and this seems like the only area where we have yet to realize what a terrible idea that is.

And the research the above mentioned have done strongly indicates that this is a problem.
