Some jobs are better than others. Some companies are better than others.

As someone who works in corporate America, I do put in the hours and take on some responsibilities that aren't necessarily required of me. I also get bonuses every year, generous pay raises, and I'm not micro-managed. My boss knows that his requirements of me will be fulfilled. My "work ethic", or whatever you'd like to call it, has allowed me to grow professionally and I'm overall quite satisfied.

Alternatively, I could do the bare minimum and become stagnant. I would likely still have my job, but without the perks I currently have.

If you're going to be making money that pays for mortgages, car notes, children's college funds, leisure and vacations, you're probably going to have to offer value to the company who is paying for that.
