That backstory is still there in the show. Only she wasn't his wife (though I think they might have been engaged), and Jamie wasn't involved.

And it was never brought up again after it was first mentioned and the truth was never revealed. In the show it had nothing to do with with why Tyrion killed Tywin.

That story is used to show us how hopeless that relationship is and the depths of Tywin's hatred for his son. The themes that story explores are very much at the heart of why that murder plays out the way it does.

And for the record, I'm not saying Tywin didn't deserve. I'm saying the act of murder for convenience or revenge are both inherently evil, and that Tyrion has committed at least one of these things.
