seeing record profits which leads to substantial increases in the wages/salaries of their employees

I get that DE is doing his bit, but just so no one else is confused: this is not how profit works

Then what causes raises in wages and salaries? When I received a raise at my job, did it come from a source other than the company's profits? I know their profits have been up in recent years. Would I have still received the raise even if the profits had not increased?

ok ill bite: "job" "performance"

i received raises during the recession after 08 and we werent making as much income

I was not with my company during the recession, however the owner has openly stated that during those years raises and bonuses were reduced for a few years because of the recession. Long time employees have confirmed this. And that, later on when profits increased again, raises and bonuses went up as well. So it seems that higher profits do lead to better pay.
