Border Collies are a family tradition for me. They are absolutely not for novice dog owners and they require a lot, a LOT of attention to stay happy. My pup is plopped on the bed asleep right now but that's after his two outings for the day, which he has every day when it's warm and one when it's cold. Dog park and beach. Every day. Or he goes crazy.

Their intelligence is based on how many generations they are removed from working stock. A Border Collie that's show stock, bread for coat and markings will still be a very smart dog, but a dog like mine that came off a farm in Tennessee is on a whole other level. They lose the desire to serve when they're bred as show dogs. My pup doesn't just do what you tell him, you can tell he's actively trying to figure out what you want him to do, and as a result he doesn't really respond to commands, you just talk to him.
