As for Hybrid Heaven itself...

The combat is incredibly nuanced in ways it didn't need to be. It's perfectly acceptable to just play the game by using one swoll leg to kick everything and using regular logic to step away from danger.

But when you dig deeper... there's shenanigans going on. Your crit rate is affected by sub-pixel position precision. Almost every enemy has a spot you can always land a critical on, and it's hella tiny. Furthermore, you have to meet certain conditions like staggering their head/arm/torso first.

So while a front kick or a side kick or a backhand or a hook or a straight punch all seemingly do the same damage (based on your skill with that specific move/bodypart notwithstanding) can all impact an enemy in different locations.

One of the easiest to do is the first enemy you fight, Scilla I believe (it's been a while, but the blue guy with a red head and two little dingledang claw arms). Wait until the enemy is about to do his move (they gesture). Then take one step backwards, wait for energy to restore, one step forward to the left, and then hope the enemy does the correct punch...

You will take a critical every time from this action.

It's been at least 10 years though, so I don't remember the crit zones of every enemy or even if every enemy can be crit aside from the base random chance.
