Just dont listen to music They have microphones on the outside to pick up ambient noise, then it generates sound waves of the opposite phase so they cancel out. So they mask noise from outside without having to totally block the ear canal and without having to turn the volume up to overpower the noise. It works best in places with a constant low frequency rumble, like an airplane engine or computer fans, it doesn't work so well against high frequency noise or impulse noise like talking or gun fire.
