People have apparently been spocking money, that is drawing on money to distort the faces so they appear to be Leonard Nimoys Spock, for years but there was a substantial uptake since the actors death in 2015. At that time the Bank of Canada released a press release asking people to stop spocking the Canadian $5 bill, featuring former prime minister Wilfrid Laurier but the activity hasnt ceased, causing it to resurface in the news again more recently.

Unlike in many countries it is actually not illegal to deface Canadian currency by spocking it but such currency carries the risk of being refused by merchants for fear of being counterfeit.
