I mean, it's shitty, but try to understand how many people they interview with, and how many people are calling, following up, sending emails. And then if/when they deny that person, they have to explain why, sometimes get an argument, and it can wind up taking 15-20 minutes out of their day focused on telling one person why they didn't get the job.

I've always considered the "don't call us, we'll call you" approach, if they want to hire me, they'll call. If I follow up and get no reply back, I take a hint and move on.

It sucks getting hung up on it, and not knowing, but sometimes these recruiters have too much on their plate to follow up with every rejected interviewee. I'm not saying that's right, but it's my prediction on why this happens a lot. I also don't agree with the tactic.
