Why should it be up to the government to decide if someone can handle more than one spouse? Plus it's not like adultery or breaking any marriage vows is a crime so they clearly don't care that much.

That applies to marriage as a concept.

You can marry as many people as you like with non-legally-binding marriages, you just can't have the government recognise and support it as it goes against the principles the government represents.
