I think using it in the context of calling something stupid totally ignores any homophobic connotations. You are using the word for a totally different meaning.

That's what trivialising is. You're taking the word gay that is prominently about homosexuality and placing it in an insulting context (homophobia or not), reinforcing the negative connotations of the word in the first place.
