Groups of self identified white LIBERALS could potentially be more influenced and swayed by Trump's racial rhetoric than CONSERVATIVE voteres according to a new study

It tested to see if racist dog whistle political mesages actually work and found that liberals could be the group most responsive to both the implicit and explicit racial appeals of Trumps campaign

A research paper titled "Who is Called by the Dog Whistle?" as Rachel Wetts from Brown University and Robb Willer of Stanford conducted the study of 898 White Americans

It used messages about welfare and gun control to test the theoriest as many political commentators have suggested that Trump's presidential victory in 2016 in part on traditionally Democratic White Voters with whom Trump's racial rhetoric has "resonated" as the current research lends credibility to this ideal that racially resentful liberals would be the group most responsive by the implicit and sometimes explicit racial appeals of Trump's presidential campaign

Data showed among whites, liberals high in racial resentment were particularly likely to switch from voting Obama in 2012 to Trump in 2016

Those who participatd were shown messages showcasing an implicit and explicit racial message opposing welfare programs to see how they respond and welfare is an issue that is already racialy coded

Liberals in high racial resentment were less supportive of welfare after being prsented with implicit racial appeal

They were also given similar messages on stricter gun control as the experiment tested how they responded messages linking black criminality to the prevalence of guns.

The study said "The pattern of results suggests that racial appeals increase the impact of racial resentment on policy views but that this effect is driven by liberals. Moderates and Conservatives on the other hand had responses to racial appeals that varied across studies but that suggest these appeals have either little effect or can backfire"

These findings extend the dog whistle hypothesis by demonstrating that ideology can condition whites responses to racial appeals but that it does have limitations they hope future research will address

418 men and 480 women that age ranged from 19 to 88 took part in the study
