The mother was the opposite, thought the family was cursed and that that home only held death and bad memories, so she basically took Edith and abandoned the grandmother, hoping to start new. The grandmother died the night after they left. After Edith's mother died and Edith became pregnant, Edith decided to go back so she could journal the family's history for her child should something happen to her.
