(If I understand the question right, I haven't played the South Park games) You'd think it'd be the case since in-universe everyone is playing a MMORPG but the core plot drivers are generally the result of the MMORPG having an effect on the "real world" like people falling into comas after dying in-game. So in that sense, the main characters aren't really roleplaying, they're genuinely trying to investigate and solve problems, it's just it largely takes place in that MMORPG. Though not entirely, in both series of games, you can log out and check your e-mail, read/watch news clips of what's going on in the game's "real" world, etc. Some minor party members though actually are just roleplaying because they're not in the loop about the serious stuff going down which occasionally leads to friction when they don't realize the others aren't.
