Contrary to what Lucas said as an older person, Star Wars was never originally aimed at kids. That really only became a thing once he realized he could merchandise literally everything ever and make 47 billion dollars.

And as the RedLetterMedia reviews point out, it's not as if Lucas is all that good at making movies aimed at kids anyway, when you consider most of the motivation and underlying setting details of the prequels would confuse the shit out of most kids. It's more the peripheral aspects of the franchise that are strongly kid-oriented while the films - especially the later ones - are aimed at a broader general audience (in the hopes of making as much money as possible).
