That really only became a thing once he realized he could merchandise literally everything ever and make 47 billion dollars. And as the RedLetterMedia reviews point out, it's not as if Lucas is all that good at making movies aimed at kids anyway, when you consider most of the motivation and underlying setting details of the prequels would confuse the shit out of most kids.
