Shotguns have armor, so even if they can't evade well, they can reduce many mooks' attacks to 1 damage. Bosses and snipers tend to get through, though, so they're not always great for those battles, despite their ridiculously high health (often 1100+). MGs have high damage and high ROF, basically letting them be MVP of any battle they're in. They don't evade well and tend to have long reload times, but when they're firing, they'll do pretty well.

SG/MG teams don't do as well against evasive enemies, though, or in battles where they have accuracy penalties (like night battles; they can't equip NV goggles). You can offset some of this with HG skills or fairies, maybe. Note that enemies with low evasion, like armored enemies or trudging mooks (the kind that advance as far forward as they can go), get torn to pieces by MGs.

But yeah, a MG/SG team has a very high efficiency, since all units have high health and survivability potential. I have someone on my friend's list with a 58,000-power MG/SG team, haha. I think they maxed out one of their fairies to reach that amount, though. Even my MG/SG team (Elphelt/Contender/PKP/PK/MG5) can nearly reach 50,000 power, and that's with a handgun in the mix.
