Gaslighting was used in psychology before politics, but gaslighting has been used to describe politics since the 90's. It was used to describe the Clinton administration's rebuke of criticism, but it's easy to see why it is ubiquitous in modern politics. It was quickly turned around to describe criticism of Clinton, G.W. Bush, and more.
