He just had smart people behind him who rightly knew that most Americans are complete fucking morons and will support their own, and had Dubya play that up during his public appearances. I didn't much like GWB's politics but from all I've heard by those who have met him, he is actually a pretty nice guy. Also, apparently he and Obama are really good friends.
