I know Ross from Accursed Farms really really likes exploring environments for the sake of exploring them, which I can respect, but for me I think I need to find something of value or else there's no point.

Ideally, the player should be made by the game to want things. And then the point of exploration becomes, hopefully, to find things that the player wants to find.

A lot of games fail to realize how important it is to make the player want things. There can be whole parts of the game that are just pushed off into the UI and ignored or else either completely banned from the player, or given freely to the player, when really the player should only be able to get the thing in small doses by doing something like exploring.
