Where did this weird idea come from that whatever the current profit level of a company is "right", therefore any increase in expenses should be eaten by customers/employees?

And why does it not apply when a company becomes *more* profitable?


It's not a weird idea. The goal of a business is profit, so it only makes sense that they would try to maximize profits and pass on their additional expenses to consumers by charging them more. Or to employees by cutting benefits or stagnating pay.

It sucks for the consumers and employees, but there is nothing weird about it.
