I suppose it differs by whether they are the main, a major character or a minor character.

Narrowing it down to mains, I suppose they fall into two categories:

1. The character's sex is more or less irrelevant to the overall story, but there are some points here and there where relevant insights are presented or sex-specific roles like motherhood come up.

2. Being female is definitely plot-important, but the character is nuanced rather than cliched.

I would actually go so far as to say the modern exceedingly-popular Superman with boobs character is actually a really poor character in most cases.
