In that case, the savior of mankind is also inevitable apparently. So why even bother trying to keep all these people alive if literally nothing can be done to change anything?

I mean, in the original series the machines literally made John Connor. They're directly responsible for creating the thing that was their downfall. That's really not so much the case in this movie.
