I have a shepherd/retriever mix (though he looks like a lab), and he's always been great with kids, and small animals. My American Blue Heeler has also been great with little ones, though he can get scared sometimes. Plus, i don't know what he's mixed with. Both of mine are shelters babies, and I've had them since they were really young.

My sister has a shih Tzu and yorkie. The Yorkies never shut up. And the Shih Tzu has a personality. Both are good, though. Though not sure how good around kids. Would have to ask my grandma. Both are expensive, though...

I think many can be good with kids if trained well, though. It might just take more training, and watching a lot to know if it'll work. Though, I would probably wait until after the child is born. Most animals aren't always the best with new people being added to the family. Though, some of the expensive ones have a waiting list. So, you could get put on one of those...

Shih Tzu's have a ton of personality. Sometimes it's like you're dealing with a small person, much more so than other breeds in my experience. Plus the eyes are so human-like it's scary sometimes.

It's not about the size of the dog in the fight, it's about the size of the fight in the dog.
