The frustrating thing is that the opposite (your characters must be safe and easy to market) is the truth. Yet these people would never give a shit. They're total hypocrites.

This is true

Aiden Pearce was conceptially Asian and they had to change it to a white guy to be more marketable.

And Dontnods previous game Remember Me (an action game) had it's budget cut by 2/3rds when they insisted on making the main character a black woman and not changing it.

You can get around it with a create-a-character feature but developers have to sacrifice their ideas and art for marketability all the time
