the first legend of zelda game was the only one that was ACTUALLY open world. nothing was ever off limits. you want to go wandering into a dungeon that you are not even remotely prepared for? go for it. try that shit in LTTP and youre gonna find SOMETHING blocking your forward progress and its gonna require you to go out and "level up" until youre able to enter. there are gigantic sections of the map that are behind a dozen or more road blocks.
you start the main part of the game and it presents you with the gigantic and exciting world map for you to explore. yay, i get to play zelda now right? nope. before you go exploring you have to talk to this old lady. oh and she wants you to talk to this kid about god knows what. oh and that kid is gonna send you after and old man. and then before you realize it several game hours have passed and you still havent gotten the opportunity to explore the place you ORIGINALLY wanted to explore. its a fucking roadblock simulator. but hey, at least LTTP TRIED to capture the feeling of the original. at least it wasnt a complete and total garbage piece of shit like ocarena and every game that came out after it.
every one since the original has been a hold your hand on a rail storytime presenting itself as an adventure and because people are so goddamn nostalgic they just eat it up without realizing theyve totally deviated from what makes a zelda game a zelda game or what makes a zelda game a GOOD game
