What was so bad about the Vong?
It does sound kinda Star Trekky though.

Best I can tell some of the posters feel it was a 'jump the shark' moment. I highly disagree. But let's stop and really think about this. They outright said that they were discarding the 'established' universe. They wouldn't be bound by the novels and whatnot and could fix anything they thought would be problematic. However with the Vong we get to see major progress for the NR, a new threat that is extremely different from the Empire on a fundamental level, a threat that could very realistically force the NR and Empire to work together as well as the Jedi and the Sith, the opportunity to show off a major galactic war without having to revert to the NR being rebels, and many other things. The choice for the NR and Empire to ally would be a massive moral/grey choice just ripe for exploration in shows and novels. You could even do stuff like, say, use the Death Star and have it actually be a legit moral choice since the Vong life forms are alien to the entire galaxy and, arguably, all potentially hostile to the very way of life enjoyed by everyone in the galaxy. Just imagine a scene where Luke and Leia along with the newer generation get confronted with the choice of using it and they end up abstaining due to their own experiences or outright doing their best to vote it's use down only to get outvoted by people who fear the Vong THAT MUCH.
