The Special Edition version actually makes it worse, because Lucas adds the stupid extra head that pokes out and grabs him. It was the EU that pushed the idea that he survived/escaped. But that's no longer canon. Though I can only assume Disney will absolutely bring him back at some point in some way anyway, because $$$. Realistically, though, it seems like he'd be screwed. His jetpack is broken, his grappling hook has been cut, his gun is gone, and he's going to be swimming in acid (when, as far as we know, his armor isn't watertight/acid-proof). Without an external air supply (which we have no evidence he has) he'd suffocate rather quickly, and he can't really cut his way out through the side because he'd still be under tons and tons of sand. So he either needs to somehow kill it from the inside and immediately climb back out the mouth as quickly as possible, or somehow immediately repair his jetpack (without tools or supplies) and try to jet back up the throat.
