Well, to be fair, Lincoln's stated policies is why in conjunction with the current climate.

My understanding is that Lincoln was going to preserve slavery but bar it in new states. Which is a power move considering so much of the politics at the time was based around free vs slave states and strategically admitting new states to bolster political parties, but we don't know how it would have gone down...because the southern states seceded. Lincoln may have been the cause but the vast bulk of the blame for secession is still on the states themselves.
