Ehh, the idea is that its an attempt to devalue the person and their opinion. Its similar to a stranger addressing an adult male as son, even though the former might be the same age or even younger. People know it isnt literal, and the tone is dismissive and condescending. (Note: some older people do use son as a friendly greeting, maybe even a term of endearment, for younger males, so there is nuance to this.)
