That specific McDs had been told multiple times their coffee was too hot, near boiling.

And they didnt secure the lid properly.

If the coffee was at the temp it was supposed to be, she likely would not have received any 3rd degree burns but still would have gotten 1st and 2nd degree.

For more detail, the burns were so bad they fused her skin together in places. She would've been severely burned if she drank it. Rather than acknowledging the mistake and apologizing, mcdonalds focused their PR work on running a misinformation campaign showing the woman as clumsy, reckless, and greedy, haven spilled her drink while driving and gotten mad. Instead she was parked, the lid was loose causing the spill, and she was only seeking reimbursement for medical costs.
