rock in the roll came up in the 50s and faded pretty quickly. by the end of the decade, buddy holly was dead, jerry lee lewis was busted for being a pedo, elvis was in the army, etc.

most people thought rock was a fad and so when you look at the billboard charts for the early 60s (say pre 64) you have songs like Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" topping the charts, a lot of girl groups, big band music, country, stuff like that.

then in 64 the beatles blow up and take over america by storm, all of a sudden rock is back on the menu & bands writing their own music (versus playing standards or having someone else write) is really in vogue. by the end of the decade rock is the dominant genre, you have more subversive acts like The Doors, Cream, Hendrix etc populating the billboard charts, and this leads the way for the 70s.
