Guess it varies from case to case. Had a friend who started dating a classmate in 10th grade and his parents met her. They said "what the fucks wrong with you, boy? That's your cousin!" Apparently he had cousins he never knew about or met. His parents didn't get along with most of the other family members, so they just wrote them off.
