It's really easy to create threads. It's harder to resolve them all in a logical and satisfying manner

Afaik the script for the last jedi was being written before the force awakens was even out.

What's more is that Rian Johnson (imo someone who was not established enough to get the directors chair for the movie in the first place) had shown in his few past works he likes to screw convention and expectation. So even it he did get some info it's very likely he'd ignore it
