I am blown away that the NHL season is as long as an NBA season Hockey seems like a sport where injuries are far more common and that it is a very taxing sport on the player.

I mean yes and no to the taxing part. There's not nearly as much contact as say, American Football or Rugby, the periods are 3x20 without nearly as much stop and go, and players rotate in and out of play fairly often. That's not to say hockey is without pain and injuries, you are doing up to 20mph at points with what amounts to knife blades on your feet, but the padding does absorb a good deal of the incidental contact, and when you go down, unless it's a body pile you tend to slide rather than just come to an abrupt thud like you would on AstroTurf.

I might even go so far as to say that basketball might be harder on the body, or at least the joints with the quick changes of direction, whereas hockey is more...arcing. momentum swings instead of stop and reverse type moves. Not a lot of jumping in hockey either for obvious reasons.
