In many languages the name for raccoons refers to the raccoon's habit of washing its food. Waschbr (wash bear) in German, orsetto lavatore (little washing bear) in Italian, raton laveur (washing rat) in French. The scientific name is Procyon lotor, Latin for "dog-like animal that washes". The English word raccoon comes from a native Powhatan word meaning "one who rubs, scrubs and scratches with its hands."
